Transistor
I. Introduction to Transistors
All
of us have specific functions to be done in the society. We participate in the
production of goods and services for the different races. That’s why there is a
need for a long a preparation to accomplish a certain task. Regardless of our
physical structure, we have edges from one another hence all of us are born
with talents and unique skills. Also, in electronics, there are certain elements
that are very important to the production of different electronic devices. These
are called as transistors.
II. Definition of Transistors
Transistors
are found everywhere in an electronic circuit and they are very important for
an electrical device to function. These are widely known as active components
in the field of electronics. They are made from semiconductor like silicon.
They are used as switching devices in digital circuits and as amplifiers.
III. Types of Transistors
1. Bipolar Junction Transistors
These
are transistors composing three legs named as base, collector, and emitter.
They are known to be current controlled devices. These three legs or leads
function as stated below.
1.1. Functions of the Three Legs or
Leads of a Bipolar Junction Transistor
a. The base is responsible in activating
the transistor.
b. The collector is the positive
terminal or lead.
c. The emitter is the negative terminal
lead.
1.2. Main Types of Bipolar Junction
Transistors
a. NPN Transistor-
The majority current carriers are
electrons.
b. PNP Transistor –
The majority current carriers are
electrons.
2. Field Effect Transistors
Transistors that are
made of 3 regions named as gate, source and drain. These are known to be
voltage controlled devices.
IV. Applications of Transistors
1. Microphone
2. Hearing aid
3. Switching Devices
